Alfred Chair in Dairy Education

Dr. Lloyd Metzger has been selected as the Alfred Chair in Dairy Education in the Dairy Science Department at South Dakota State University. The S. A. Education Foundation of Milbank has funded the Alfred Chair in Cheese Chemistry and Technology in the Dairy Science Department since approximately 1991. This Chair was first occupied in 1994 by Dr. David Henning, who will retire from the position and SDSU on 30th June 2006. The S. A. Education Foundation will continue to sponsor this chair to enhance dairy education and research at SDSU. The Chair will now be called the Alfred Chair in Dairy Education. Dr. Lloyd Metzger is currently Associate Professor of Food Science at the University of Minnesota. Dr. Metzger holds BS and MS degrees in Dairy Science from SDSU and PhD in Food Science from Cornell University. He then joined General Mills in Minneapolis as a Research Food Scientist. While at SDSU he was a member of the 1991 national champion dairy products judging team. In 2001 he accepted a faculty position at the University of Minnesota. He teaches courses in food analysis and food protein chemistry and conducts research on cheese and other dairy products. He is also the director of the MN-SD Dairy Foods Research Center. He has developed an outstanding research record and industry collaboration in his position at Minnesota. He was recognized in 2005 by the American Dairy Science Association with the Foundation Scholar Awards.

Dr. Metzger will begin his position as Alfred Chair in January 2007. He will help enhance dairy education through teaching courses in Dairy Science and developing a research program in dairy processing.
