Dean's and Director's Award

Dr. Alvaro Garcia received the Dean's and Director's Award at the 2004 South Dakota Cooperative Extension Annual Conference. This was in recognition of Dr. Garcia's "significantly productive performance on the dairy research project in the North 5 Field Education Unit". Dr. Garcia joined the Dairy Science Department in January 2001 and has made outstanding contributions to the state dairy industry through his position as the Dairy Extension Specialist. Through his international experience Dr. Garcia brings a global perspective to the dairy extension program in the state and he has also assisted in the recruitment of dairies to South Dakota. He routinely takes leadership in the development of programs with producers, faculty and country educators. He has also taken the lead in the publication of the Dairy Matters Newsletter, which is jointly published by SDSU, the South Dakota Department of Agriculture, and the Midwest Dairy Institute. He recently conducted the first work for dairy producers in Spanish. He is also an active collaborator in departmental research. Dr. Garcia is the chair-elect for the Professional Dairy Heifer Growers Association.
