Faculty Members Receive Promotion

Dr. Ashraf Hassan has been promoted to Associate Professor effective 1st July 2007. Dr. Hassan has been a faculty member in Dairy Science at SDSU since July 2003 and is responsible for teaching and research in Dairy Manufacturing. Dr. Hassan teaches Technical Control of Dairy Products I, parts of Dairy Product Processing I and II and Laboratory Techniques in Dairy Science. He has developed a strong research program in the area of low fat cheese technology, in particular investigating the applications of cultures producing exopolysaccharides for improving the quality of low fat cheeses. His expertise in the application of electron microscopy is well recognized. His research work is supported by the Midwest Dairy Foods Research Center, US-Egypt Joint Science Technology Board (USDA-FAS) program and others. In recognition of his work the American Dairy Science Association recognized Dr. Hassan with the Foundation Scholars Award in 2006.

Dr. Arnold Hippen has been promoted to Professor of Dairy Science effective 1st July 2007. He has been a Dairy Science faculty member since 1998 when he joined as Assistant Professor under the David H. Henry sustained Professorship. During his tenure at SDSU, Dr. Hippen has been involved in teaching 6 Dairy Production classes. Dr. Hippen’s research is in the area of dairy cattle nutrient management influencing productivity and production efficiency, nutrient management, and general management strategies. Further, he has also been involved in studies that are evaluating the use of glycerol, a by-product of biodiesel manufacture, for the prevention of fatty liver and ketosis in dairy cows. Dr. Hippen has served as research mentor to at least 5 undergraduate students. He is an active participant in multi-state regional projects, NC 1009, Metabolic relationships of nutrients and NC 1119, Management systems to improve the economic and environmental sustainability of dairy enterprises. Dr. Hippen received the 2007 SDSU Gamma Sigma Delta Research Award.

Dr. Kenneth Kalscheur has received Tenure in Dairy Science effective 1st July 2007. He was promoted to Associate Professor in 2006 and joined the Dairy Science Department in 2001 as Assistant Professor. Dr. Kalscheur is involved in teaching six courses in Dairy Production. Dr. Kalscheur’s research program focuses on dairy cattle nutrition, especially in the area of distillers grains research as well as on environmental issues; improving nutrient utilization in dairy cattle to reduce nutrient excretion. Through this research he was been invited to present his findings at national meetings and in Korea in 2005. Most of Dr. Kalscheur’s research has been supported by funds that he has acquired through external grants. Dr. Kalscheur is also an active participant on a NC multi-state research project; NC-1119, Management Systems to Improve the Economic and Environmental Sustainability of Dairy Enterprises. Dr. Kalscheur is currently serving as an Exchange Professor at Chungnam National University, South Korea.
