Dr. Kalscheur Promoted to Associate Professor
Dr. Kenneth Kalscheur has been promoted to Associate Professor in Dairy Science (Production) effective 1st July 2006. Dr. Kalscheur is involved in teaching several courses in Dairy Production including parts of DS 130, 412, 432, 452 and 731 and 100% of DS 711. Dr. Kalscheur has developed a new class entitled Environmental Management of Dairy Systems. Dr. Kalscheur’s serves as a advisor to numerous undergraduate students as well as graduate students. He has hosted three such interns; two from ENSAT in France and one from the University of Nebraska.
Dr. Kalscheur does not have a formal Extension appointment but regularly collaborates with the Dairy Science Extension Specialist for publications. These include Extension Extras, Fact Sheets, contributions to ABS CES publications, and contributions to other popular press publications. Several of these publications have been translated into Spanish. In this connection he also responds to requests from dairy producers on assistance with nutrition questions. These activities have helped provide an important link of research to producers.
Dr. Kalscheur’s research program focuses on dairy cattle nutrition, especially in the area of distillers grains research. Specifically, his work has demonstrated how co-products of the growing ethanol industry in South Dakota, wet distillers grains can be incorporated into dairy rations. His research has also focused on environmental issues; improving nutrient utilization in dairy cattle to reduce nutrient excretion. Through this research he has gained recognition and been invited to present his findings at national meetings and in Korea in 2005. Dr. Kalscheur is coauthor on 15 refereed publications and author or coauthor on 33 abstracts. In addition, Dr. Kalscheur’s expertise resulted in 7 invited presentations. Most of Dr. Kalscheur’s research has been supported by funds that he has acquired through grant writing. Dr. Kalscheur is also an active participant on a NC multi-state research project; NC-1119, Management Systems to Improve the Economic and Environmental Sustainability of Dairy Enterprises.
