Alfred Chair in Dairy Education

Dr. Lloyd Metzger has been appointed as Associate Professor and Alfred Chair in Dairy Education beginning 1st January 2007. Dr. Metzger holds B.S. and M.S. degrees in Dairy Manufacturing from SDSU and Ph.D. in Food Science from Cornell University. Dr. Metzger was employed as Research Scientist at General Mills for 2 years prior to joining the Food Science and Nutrition department at the University of Minnesota, St. Paul. He was promoted to Associate Professor and received tenure in 2006. While at Minnesota, Dr. Metzger also served as the Director of the Midwest Dairy Foods Research Center. His expertise is in the area of structural and functional roles of components of cheese and fermented milks. He has published extensively. He has 26 refereed publications, 42 abstracts, 2 book chapters, and 6 patents. Since 2003 he was PI on grants totaling approximately $1 million and co-pi on many other grants. He taught several undergraduate and graduate courses at the University of Minnesota and advised 7 M.S. students, 4 Ph.D candidates and 2 post docs. In 2005 Dr. Metzger was recognized by the American Dairy Science Association with the ADSA Foundation Scholar Award for his outstanding research work. He is very active in professional organizations such as the American Dairy Science Association and North Central Cheese Industries Association. In his new position at SDSU, he will teach several courses, advise undergraduate and graduate students and develop a research program in cheese technology. He will also continue as the director of the Midwest Dairy Foods Research Center. The Alfred Chair was the first endowed chair at SDSU and was first filled in 1994. The Chair is sponsored by the S.A. Education Foundation of Milbank, SD in honor of Alfred Gonzenbach and Alfred Nef who were the founders of the Valley Queen Cheese Factory in Milbank, SD.
