Dairy Science Students at National PAS
The National Postsecondary Agricultural Student (PAS) Organization provides opportunities for individual growth, leadership and career preparation and aspires to be the premier leadership and career development organization serving college agriculture students. It is available to students in agriculture/agribusiness/natural resources postsecondary programs in approximately 550 institutions in all 50 states.
Currently there are four
chapters in South Dakota; South Dakota State University, Mitchell Technical
Institute, Lake Area Technical Institute, and Western
Dakota Technical Institute. Members have the opportunity to compete
at the state level in
Career Program Areas which gives students the chance to compete against the
best in the state in areas they are studying. This includes Employment Interview,
Ag. Sales, Impromptu Speaking, Public Speaking, Career Planning, Career Progress,
Crop Specialist, and Livestock Specialist. Each student selects a program
to compete in related to their major or area of study. The SDSU PAS chapter
also competes at the National Conference where there are many other areas
that the students can compete in. At the National Conference in St.
Louis, Missouri
in March, Brittany Nussbaum (Dairy Production Sophomore)
was elected as the 2006-2007 National PAS President-elect. Garrett
Doucette (Dairy Manufacturing
Junior) was elected as the 2006-2007 National PAS Vice-President-elect. This
will give these students the chance to promote agriculture to students and
industry leaders across the US. At the National Conference, Garrett received
1st place in Employment Interview. Earlier in the year at the State PAS Conference,
Garrett received 1st place in Employment Interview, 5th
in Ag. Mechanics and was awarded a CHS Cooperative Foundation Scholarship. Brittany placed
3rd in Speakers for Agriculture Impromptu and was a member of the 1st
place team
for Parliamentary Procedures.
