Welcome to Dairy Science
at SDSU. The Dairy Science website contains comprehensive information about
the department, including information specifically for undergraduate and graduate
studies. As a prospective student you are probably interested in specific information
for making critical decisions as you prepare for college. This page is designed
to help you navigate your way through the Dairy Science website to help you
answer these questions. When you click on the underlined text a new page pertaining

return to this page. You may choose either undergraduate or
graduate studies. In addition to the information below there
are numerous other pertinent questions. We invite you to browse through video
clips that describe our program and to visit the department in person for
discussions with faculty and students and for tours of our dairy
farm and processing

There are over 65 undergraduate students in the department. Some are Dairy Production majors, others are Dairy Manufacturing and some are double majors. With proper planning a double major can be completed in four years.

What can I do with a degree in Dairy Science? Job placement in Dairy Science is 100% and the starting salaries are outstanding (Over $40,000). Graduates are placed all over the United States but majority are in the upper Midwest. Dairy Science is a very diverse field with numerous job opportunities in a wide range of specializations. The department invites employers to visit and interview students during the fall and spring semesters. We also help students look for summer internships.

Are any scholarships available in Dairy Science?
How do I apply for a freshman scholarship in Dairy Science? The Dairy Science Department offers 14 freshman scholarships ranging from $500 to $1100. The SDSU scholarship application form that you submit with your application for admission is also an application for Dairy Science scholarships provided you declare Dairy Science as a major on the form. Because the scholarships are competitive you are advised to submit your application by February. If you are awarded a scholarship you will be invited to the Dairy Science scholarship banquet in early April. In subsequent classes you will be eligible for one or more of many other Dairy Science scholarships as well as scholarships from the College of Agriculture and Biological Sciences.
What qualifications do the Dairy Science faculty members have? We have 11 faculty members of which 9 hold Ph.D degrees in various specialization areas. One faculty member is the farm manager, another plant manager, and there is one Extension specialist. All of the other faculty members have teaching and research programs.
How do I apply for admission to Dairy Science?

The department routinely has 13 to 15 graduate students working towards M.S. or Ph.D degrees at any give time. Master's degrees usually take two years to complete and Ph.D. from 3 to 5 years.

Is financial aid available? A limited number of research assistantships are available. Once a student is admitted, the award of an assistantship will depend on the availability of funds at the time.
Is a GRE required? No
What is the process of application for international students? Follow instructions in the above admissions link. Because of additional time requirements in issuing an I-20, processing visas, etc international students are encouraged to complete the application process early. For example, for admissions for the fall semester, submissions by the end of April are encouraged and for spring semester, by the end of September.

What are the current research projects? There are various on-going research projects. Some are Agricultural Experiment Station projects, others are funded by the Midwest Dairy Foods Research Center (Dairy Manufacturing only) and there are several other externally funded projects. The Dairy Science publications listing will also provide a perspective on dairy research in the department.
