June Dairy Month and other summer activities

The summer, especially June brought on numerous activities for the Dairy Science department. Dairy Science students, faculty and staff have been involved in several activities during summer 2007:

Dairy Camp and Dairy Day

Dairy Club students hosted the 4th annual dairy camp on the SDSU campus. Approximately 20 students in the k-12 age group from South Dakota, Minnesota and Iowa participated. The Dairy Camp was followed by an open house at the Dairy Research and Training Facility. Area producers and other interested individuals visited the farm and viewed research activities at the dairy farm. Click here to see images...

KWAT

The Dairy Science department donated ice cream at the KWAT, Watertown radio station in celebration of June Dairy Month. Dairy Science faculty also had the opportunity to talk about the dairy science program and other pertinent dairy activities. KWAT staff scooped ice cream for numerous drive-by customers.

Jersey Breeders Annual National Convention

Jersey breeders from around the country traveled to Sioux Falls, SD to participate in the national Jersey convention from 27 to 30 June. Included in the convention were youth activities. Dairy Science faculty and students assisted with the youth Pentathlon on Thursday. On Saturday, 30 youth traveled north to Brookings to visit the Dairy Science department at SDSU. Here faculty and students conducted dairy demonstrations, provided tours of the SDSU dairy plant and dairy farm and led cheese making activities for the youth. Click here to see images...

One of our cows (pictured at left) was announced in June by the Holstein Association as the top milk producers in South Dakota. Her milk production was recorded at just above 32,000 pounds.

In addition, Katie Norling, Dairy Science sophomore, is the reigning Dairy Princess for South Dakota and promoting the dairy industry during the summer. Megan Mathews is a finalist for the Princess Kay of the Milkyway and busy preparing for the final selection in September.
